Margo McAuliffe is a retired high school math teacher who, at the age of 69, followed a lifetime dream to go to Africa. She landed in Naivasha, Kenya and ended up teaching math to girls. She established Kenya Help as a non-profit dedicated to helping women and children in Kenya. Through her work, Kenya Help built St. Francis Xavier Secondary School, which served over 320 girls in Naivasha. Kenya Help also refurbished the nearby orphanage and provided scholarships for many of the girls. For years, Margo returned to Kenya each summer for 2 months. You can read all about her adventures in her Blog archive.
Julie first met Margo (Kenya Help’s founder) in 2011, joined the Board in 2017, and accompanied Margo to Kenya in 2018 and 2019. Meeting the students in Naivasha, Kenya is a treat she will always treasure. "They are bright and resourceful and fun, and it is a joy to contribute to something that helps them succeed." With a background in mechanical engineering, she returned to school at age 40 (with two toddlers at home) and now enjoys her second career as a financial planner, CFP®. She owns her own business in Menlo Park, CA. Julie is an avid exerciser who enjoys swimming, biking, and hiking. In 2020, she began running for the first time in her life, and now runs once a week with her daughter. She is also a member of a book club, and always makes time to do a couple of NY Times puzzles with her son after work. Most recently, she returned to school to begin learning French, which has been a 20-year ambition that is finally being brought to fruition.
