#23 – Wrapping It Up

August 22, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

I’m sitting in the Nairobi airport, waiting for the check-in counter to open.  My flight doesn’t leave for more than 5 hours, but I wanted Fr Kiriti to get out of NBO before dark and back in Naivasha in the early evening.  This is the end of year #15.  I had thought last year might […]

#22 – Margo, Chief Chef

August 15, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

Or as we said in my family, chief cook and bottle washer!  Among the people I’ve gotten to know well is a very colorful, smart, strong woman named Joyce Muturia.  I’ve eaten at her home many times, but this year, when she learned I occasionally cooked American hamburgers for John, Mary and now also Mary’s […]

#21 – Mji Wa Neema Reunion

August 12, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

Since so many Mji kids came to Naivasha from their various schools for the Saturday ETW reunion (see # 20) we decided we’d have our Mji reunion Sunday.  I’d bought a sheep for the event, although we all prefer goat, we planned the food, John and Mary made sure the girls and boys dorms were […]

ETW Reunion

August 11, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

Empower the World (ETW) convened its annual meeting and reunion at Archbishop Ndingi this morning.  It was the best so far, although many of our current or past sponsored students were not there.  I was most pleased that almost all the Mji kids were with us—on time!!!  There were some 65 from form 1’s to […]

#19 – Day 2 of Math Camp

August 6, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

It’s going even better than I had hoped.  Yesterday 15  form 4’s, today 25, with several people indicating they will be bringing their children tomorrow.  Catherine sent 2 of her LB ladies to ask about it for their children, one a form 2 the other form 4.  Last year we had 50 form 4’s at […]

#18 – Many Events, Cont’d

August 5, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

In addition to everything going on here, I’ve been dealing with a letter from the IRS telling me I owe over$12,000 in back taxes and threatening mayhem if I don’t pay up by August 6.  My tax preparer emailed me a Power of Attorney form, which had to be printed in Hillary’s office (I have […]

#17 – Many Events

August 4, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

I haven’t posted for more than a week and it’s not because I’ve had nothing to write!Au contraire, I’ve been too busy to write. I think I’ll work backwards.  I had yesterday all planned to the micro-minute.  Should know better than that by now and I soon found the world was not following my schedule.  […]

#16 – A Day at the Doctor

July 24, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

I’m changing a name because this is an intimate story about “Susie”.  First thing I know yesterday morning, having spent several hours gratefully responding to my lovely readers who actually wrote to me (thank you), I find Susie in the kitchen with Mary (Mji).  Both speak very quietly, particularly Susie, whose English is pretty limited. Eventually […]

#15 – Just Another Sunday

July 22, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

Not!  I’ve been itching to get into the bookshelves in the Mji dining hall.  They are stuffed with outdated text books, exercise books, pages of old newspapers, miscellaneous junk—nothing relating to the current curriculum.  I enlisted (coerced?) John and Mary to help me dig into them.  It seems that a lot of books were donated […]

#14 – Unsubscribing

July 21, 2019 by Alison Staab Leave a Comment

The wifi network for the parish has been out for a week, but thought I was OK with my small modem.  But then my modem stopped working.  Just now I realized I’m probably out of credit.  I’m writing from SFG where wifi is working fine.  WHEW!  Had quite a pile of email awaiting, but alas, […]
